What is bead loom weaving?

In loom weaving, beads sit in rows between warp threads stretched on a loom and are held in place by the weft thread. A whole row is woven at once, so the work grows quickly.

The beads form a straight grid that does not shift, so the bracelet looks just like the pattern on screen. That makes it the easiest stitch for names, words and pixel art.

What to know when designing a loom pattern

  1. One more warp than beads

Each bead sits between two warp threads, so a pattern 11 beads wide needs 12 warps. See the bead loom guide for the setup.

  2. The grid does not shift

Unlike peyote and brick stitch, rows do not offset by half a bead. Straight lines and letters come out exactly as drawn.

  3. Each row is woven in one pass

You string the whole row, pass it under the warps and back through; so picking up the row’s colors in order, left to right, is what matters.

Think in squares

One square is one bead: words and logos keep crisp edges, and motifs like diamonds repeat cleanly. Have a picture already? The image to loom pattern converter turns it into a grid in seconds.

Bead loom pattern questions

What is the difference between loom and peyote?

On a loom, beads sit in a straight grid and a whole row is woven at once; you need a loom. In peyote, beads are added one at a time with a needle and columns shift by half a bead; no loom is needed, but the pattern must account for the offset.

How many warp threads do I need?

One more than the pattern width. A bracelet 9 beads wide needs 10 warp threads.

Can I make a loom pattern from a photo?

Yes. Pick a picture on the image to loom pattern page; BeadDot turns it into a loom pattern with Miyuki color codes, and you can edit it here.

Which beads does it work with?

You can design with the Miyuki Delica 11/0 and TOHO Treasure 11/0 color catalogs and see every color’s code and name.

Is the loom pattern maker free?

Yes. Designing, follow mode, inventory and cloud storage are free and ad-free.
