How to make fringe earrings

  1. Base row

Ladder stitch the base beads side by side. This row is both the bottom of the triangle and where the fringe hangs from.

  2. Triangle

Work up in brick stitch; each row is one bead shorter and the last has two. Add a loop of 3–4 beads at the top for the ear wire.

  3. Fringe

Bring the thread down to the base row and hang a strand from every base bead: string the beads listed, go around the last bead and back up through the rest.

Tips

  • Use a long thread for the fringe; a pair can take 2–3 metres of thread.
  • Delica 11/0 beads make straight, neat fringe; round seed beads make it a little wavier.
  • Don’t pull tight when turning around the last bead of a strand, so the fringe stays supple.
  • Make the second earring from the same instructions; with slanted fringe, mirror it so the pair is symmetrical.

Fringe earring FAQ

How many beads do I need for a pair of fringe earrings?

A pair with a 10-bead base and 30-bead V fringe takes about 540 beads, roughly 2.7 g of Delica 11/0. The maker counts every color’s beads and grams for the size you choose.

Which beads should I use?

Cylinder beads such as Miyuki Delica 11/0 or TOHO Treasure 11/0 keep the brick stitch triangle neat and the fringe straight. The maker gives codes for both.

Are these patterns free?

Yes. Every width, fringe shape, color and the PDF are free, with no sign-up.

How big will the earring be?

With Delica 11/0 each base bead takes about 1.7 mm and each row 1.3 mm. A 10-bead base with 30-bead fringe makes an earring about 1.7 × 5.1 cm, without the ear wire.
